An Introduction

by Quinn Emmett

Welcome to The Fog Horn. We’re a fiction magazine, publishing four original short stories every month, twelve months a year. Exclusive, consumable stories for the modern, on-the-go reader.

Back up. Why Short Stories?

Hemingway, Asimov, Poe, Munro, Chekhov, Salinger, Kafka or Bradbury.

Titans of literature, working in the smallest form of fiction. Every word counts.

Our name, The Fog Horn, is drawn from one of Bradbury’s most epic and moving science fiction stories. In it, a mythical beast, the last of his kind, rises from the depths of the sea to answer the call of another, a friend. To chase a forlorn hope, a beacon, a dream. What he finds isn’t as expected, and through his rage we learn about loneliness, and companionship, and time, and inevitable, crushing truth.

So much, in so few pages.

It's just impossible to squeeze in a novel these days. We’re always on the move: wake up late, race around for twelve hours, and then hit the pillow with five minutes of quality reading time left before everything fades to black. What happened?

All we really want is to become in engrossed in a good story and not feel like total assholes when that paperback keeps staring at us from the bedside table, abandoned for weeks at a time.

So we built a magazine around writing that’s exciting, original, and consumable. Short stories are, by their very nature, meant to be devoured. They should light you up and leave you wanting for more. And with just four stories a month, you know that we’ll never be passive-aggressive and bitter because you found us fun, but unconquerable.

Who The Hell Are You People?

We’re a screenwriter, a coder and an artist, but more than anything we love to read and imagine and daydream and we love to build shiny new things.

Most importantly, we’re humble hosts for exceptional writing. We’re excited to feature authors pulled from the ranks of your favorite movies and TV shows. We're also breaking new talent from the promising amoeba pool of the world wide web. We know you’re out there, and we want to read your stuff. If it’s great -- really, really great -- we’ll publish it.

Why Should I Subscribe to The Fog Horn?

Chances are you’re as busy as we are, and you’ve got a device in your pocket that’s capable of a hell of a lot more than just rearranging pieces of pixelated candy. We’re not saying this app is capable of firing missiles or anything (note: Conor, please add to wireframes for v2), but we can promise you one thing: our stories will take you away. Comedy, horror, romance, thrillers, sci-fi, and more.

Enjoy them on a bus, on the subway, under a tree, on the beach or snuggled up against a robot in front of a warm winter fire. Forget where you were, where you are, where you’re going.

Your subscription is our only source of revenue. You’re helping to pay writers for their work, something that’s not exactly commonplace these days.

Lastly, we don't just dream about the future, we support it. We donate 5% of our net revenue to 826LA, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting students with their creative and expository writing skills.

Help us pay it forward.

Thanks for reading. Enjoy The Fog Horn.
